The Chairman of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation of the eighth convocation. Elected in single mandate constituency № 163 (Saratov constituency - Saratov Oblast)
recalled in his Telegram channel that the day before
members of the State Duma denounced the Soviet-era fishing agreement with the British government, signed on May 25, 1956.
“That is the rare case in our practice. We are no more the party to the treaty that was in force for 68 years and allowed British ships to catch fish in the Barents Sea: in the territorial waters of the USSR and then Russia. This was a unilateral decision, our country received nothing in return,” emphasized Vyacheslav Volodin.
He recalled that when Nikita Khrushchev made such a decision in 1956, it was difficult to say what he was thinking about. According to the Chairman of the State Duma, “he was definitely guided not by national interests.”
“In 2023 alone, the British caught 566 thousand tons of cod and haddock. This is 40% of their “fish menu”. They say that it is their favorite dish. At the same time, they introduce almost two thousand sanctions against us, and act extremely unfriendly and aggressive towards Russia,” stressed Vyacheslav Volodin. “When they ask if we can respond to their sanctions, we definitely can,” he added.
The Chairman of the State Duma emphasized that the President made a decision to denounce the 1956 treaty, and the members of the State Duma unanimously supported it.
“Policy consists actions and decisions. With Gorbachev, we lost the country, but we get it back with Putin: Crimea returned to Russia, our brothers in Donbass and Novorossiya were protected, and now we are taking back our natural resources,” added Vyacheslav Volodin.
“After the denunciation of this agreement, our fishermen will be able to catch more fish in the Barents Sea, and it will become more affordable for our citizens. And the British people should learn Russian proverbs: Russians are slow to saddle up, but ride fast,” concluded the Chairman of the State Duma.
