On Thursday, November 23, during the visit to Nanjing, Vyacheslav Volodin met with professors and students of the Nanjing University studying Russian language. Nanjing is one of the ten leading research centers in the world, the Nanjing University is one of the oldest and largest universities in China.
Vyacheslav Volodin noted the dynamic development of relations between Russia and China, contribution of the heads of states Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping to that, and increasing demand for specialists who can speak Chinese and Russian.
“The demand for other languages will decline, but the demand for Russian and Chinese will only increase. I would like to congratulate you and the students who have chosen to study both Russian and Chinese. You have chosen an interesting future, you definitely will not be without work,” said Vyacheslav Volodin.
“More than 37 thousand Chinese citizens are studying in Russian universities. This is 4.5 thousand more than in 2021. 7.5 thousand citizens of our country are studying in Chinese universities. There we see the increasing number of those people who want to study in Russia and China, but in any case this is not enough: it is very important for us to increase educational exchanges so that the number of students will grow. We will know about each other more, and that means that there will be more stability in our relations,” added the Chairman of the State Duma.
Vyacheslav Volodin also noted the fact that the quality of training of engineers, mathematicians, and programmers was important for the development of countries.
“It is important for us to exchange experiences and best practices to develop together, create advanced industries and innovations,” he said. According to the Chairman of the State Duma, in order to achieve “high economic growth rates, it is necessary to start improving the quality of education.”
“If you analyze the development of any world power and the reasons for economic success, you can see that at first there were improvements in the quality of education. Then there was the creation of technologies, innovation — and only then economic growth,” stressed Vyacheslav Volodin. “There is the same situation in the opposite case: a country loses its position when the level of education declines, and, of course, then there arise big problems in the economy,” he added.
The rector of the Nanjing University Zhemin Tan, in turn, noted the University’s interest in student exchanges with Russia: in recent years, more than 70 Nanjing University students had been sent to Russian higher education institutions and more than 130 Russian students had studied in Nanjing. According to Zhemin Tan, the University has signed a cooperation agreement with nine universities and academic institutions in Russia, including the Moscow State University, the St. Petersburg State University and the Russian Academy of Sciences. And such cooperation with Russia will develop, according to the rector.
