The members of the State Duma at the plenary meeting unanimously supported the decision to denounce the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe. The relevant bill was submitted to the State Duma by the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin.

The explanatory note says that the Treaty was signed in Paris on 19 November 1990 and came into force on 9 November 1992. It established a balance of forces between member states of two military-political alliances — the Warsaw Pact and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) — at lower levels and limited the possibility of deploying their conventional forces along the line of contact.

“Since the beginning of the 90s, the large-scale military-political changes, primarily related to NATO expansion, affected the Treaty and made it obsolescent and irrelevant,” the document says.

“Washington and Brussels, obsessed with the idea of building a unipolar world, moving NATO eastwards, destroyed the global security system,” posted the Chairman of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin Volodin Vyacheslav Victorovich Volodin

on his Telegram channel. “The NATO members, when creating NATO in 1949, declared that it was created solely for defensive purposes. In fact, the bloc turned out to be a wolf in sheep's clothing,” he stressed.

“They only attacked and were on the offensive, brought suffering to people, destroyed states: Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Libya, Iraq, Syria,” emphasized the Chairman of the State Duma.

“Washington, using NATO and supplying the Kiev terrorist regime with weapons, is destabilizing the situation in the world to maintain its hegemony. It could lead to a global catastrophe,” stressed Vyacheslav Volodin.

In 2007, the head of state declared a moratorium on implementing the terms of the treaty. “Since 2007, the situation in Europe in the field of conventional weapons has significantly deteriorated. The USA and its allies pursue the course towards military confrontation with Russia, fraught with catastrophic consequences,” the explanatory note also says. In this regard, the President of the Russian Federation made a decision to denounce it.

In addition, the Russian Federation automatically ceases to be a part of a number of related international treaties.
