On Wednesday, June 23, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that the Black Sea Fleet and the border patrol ships fired warning shots close to the British HMS Defender, which illegally entered the territorial waters of the Russian Federation.

Later, the BBC reported that more than 50 pages of classified documents of the UK Ministry of Defence were found at a bus stop in Kent. These documents also contain information about the passage of the HMS Defender near the Crimean Peninsula.

The Chairman of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation of the eighth convocation. Elected in single mandate constituency № 163 (Saratov constituency - Saratov Oblast)
said the discussion of the situation with HMS Defender “looks like a detective story.”

“According to the published information about those classified documents, the UK authorities had planned a real provocation — the passage of a military ship near the Crimean Peninsula, the territory of the Russian Federation. The possible Russia’s response to such actions was also mentioned. They understood all the consequences,” stressed the Chairman of the State Duma.

“That was really good that there were no tragic consequences after that incident. Except for the shame of those who had planned such operation. And the consequences could be disastrous. Any provocations against a nuclear power endanger peace and global security,” stressed Viacheslav Volodin.

He added that it was hard to understand why the EU states and the United States of America kept quiet and did not urge to impose sanctions against the UK.

“It is quite obvious that they are trying to keep quiet and to sweep that incident under the rug. That is simply another evidence of double standards. It would be right if international organizations, like the UN, OSCE, and PACE and the European Parliament, condemn such actions of the UK authorities and hold accountable those who are behind this escapade,” stressed the Chairman of the State Duma.

“But if the top secret documents could be found at a bus stop, there is nothing to talk about,” he added.
