“This agreement has been existing for almost 30 years. It allows the Treaty members (34 of 57 OSCE member states) to perform aerial observation to monitor military activities, while not limiting or prohibiting any categories of weapons,” said the Chairman of the State Duma Viacheslav Volodin Volodin Vyacheslav Victorovich Volodin

He added that in November 2020, the United States was the first state officially withdrawn from the Open Skies Treaty, and of course there would be a response from Russia. “This is not the first time when the US has acted like that. Earlier, Washington withdrew from the ABM Treaty, then from the INF Treaty,” he stressed.

“By ceasing to comply with its obligations, the United States is consistently destroying the entire architecture of international security. Using far-fetched pretexts and accusations, Washington is openly destroying global strategic stability and damaging international law pursuing its own self-serving interests,” Viacheslav Volodin said.

He added that Russia had always supported and continue to support international agreements based on the principles of trust and mutual respect. “But we cannot put the national security of our country at risk,” stressed the Chairman of the State Duma.

“We understand that, so we plan to consider the bill on denunciation of the Treaty on Open Skies today at the meeting of Council of the State Duma as the priority issue,” he concluded.
