“The recent session has shown that that there was a solid majority of those parliamentarians who did not support any attacks against the Russian delegation. All attempts to hinder the work of deputies and senators had failed,” said Viacheslav Volodin Volodin Vyacheslav Victorovich Volodin

, commenting on the outcomes of the work of the Russian delegation during the winter session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

“Russia’s position in PACE has greatly strengthened over the year after its return. Most of parliamentarians are seeking for development of a constructive dialogue. For our part, we will maintain contacts. There will be more and more provocations against Russia, as the elections to the State Duma approach, and we should be ready for that,” added the Chairman of the State Duma.

He also paid attention to the discussions of the issue of a violation of human rights by technology companies. “We plan to use the PACE platform to monitor the situation and exchange legislative experience,” said Viacheslav Volodin.

Successful outcomes

“We worked almost the entire last week in PACE and our delegation, including those parliamentarians who took part in the events remotely from Moscow, and those three deputies and two senators who worked in Strasbourg, all of us took very serious note of our work. And I think that the outcomes of our work are successful,” said the Deputy Chairman of the State Duma, head of the delegation to PACE Petr Tolstoy Tolstoy Petr Olegovich Tolstoy

“All the possible anti-Russian statements were made, and, of course, the ritual of revising of credentials also took place, and that is the Assembly’s self-bestowed opportunity to deprive a national delegation of powers. We have always opposed such approach,” stressed the parliamentarian.

He stressed that the representatives of the Russian delegation slowly and patiently had managed to explain their position to their colleagues and to make everything for full ratification of the credentials of the Russian delegation.

“If the credentials had not been ratified in full, we would have left the Assembly and that would have caused a new institutional crisis in the Council of Europe,” said the Deputy Chairman of the State Duma.

The head of the delegation assessed the participation of parliamentarians in the session as “a victory of Russian interests for another year of work in that organization.”

The recent PACE session was held on January 26–28 in Strasbourg.
