The Chairman of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation of the eighth convocation. Elected in single mandate constituency № 163 (Saratov constituency - Saratov Oblast)
and Steingrímur J. Sigfússon pointed to strong and long-standing
relations, including trade, between Russia and Iceland.
“I am very glad that Russia has returned to PACE, and we no longer see empty seats,” said Steingrímur J. Sigfússon. He emphasized the importance of dialogue and noted that Iceland, even during the Cold War, did not cut off relations with the USSR.
“As a politician, I believe in the power of dialogue despite the differences,” said the Speaker of Althing. “It would be right to develop relations along the parliamentary line,” he said. Viacheslav Volodin also called for a more effective dialogue between the legislative bodies of the two countries.
“We hope that this meeting will lay the foundations for further relations and we will be able to develop them between our parliaments in the interests of our countries and further cooperation,” said the Chairman of the State Duma.
This is the first meeting of the Chairman of the State Duma and Speaker of Althing.
The parties also discussed the situation in the Arctic (Iceland is currently a chair of the Arctic Council). The Chairman of the State Duma invited Speaker of Althing to visit Russia.
