Viacheslav Volodin: European Parliament and PACE need to promptly discuss the risks of the consequences of deploying American missiles in Europe

The Chairman of the State Duma commented on the situation that had developed after the United States withdrew from the INF Treaty and tested a new cruise missile with a range of over 500 km on August 18, and a statement by Russian President Vladimir Putin

The Chairman of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation of the eighth convocation. Elected in single mandate constituency № 163 (Saratov constituency - Saratov Oblast)
, a test of the new missile by the United States of America confirmed the validity of the Russian claims on the violation of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty by the American side and deliberate withdrawal from it.

“A test by the United States of America of a new cruise missile with a range of over 500 km proves that in recent years the USA, in violation of the Treaty, has been engaged in the creation of weapons prohibited by the INF Treaty and deliberately launched an anti-Russia propaganda campaign, accusing it of non-compliance with the Treaty,” told Viacheslav Volodin to the parliamentary reporters.

“By provoking the world into a new arms race, the United States remains true to its idea of super-excellence and total impunity. In such a situation Russia will not remain indifferent,” said the Chairman of the State Duma. “The decision of the Russian President Vladimir Putin to prepare a symmetrical response is fully consistent with the task of ensuring the security of our citizens and our country,” stated the Chairman of the State Duma.

“Today, it would be right for parliaments, primarily of European countries, to discuss the consequences of deploying American missiles on their territory. It is obvious that the United States assigned them the unenviable role of countries that would be forced to receive a retaliatory nuclear strike. Do citizens of European countries want this? Does this role correspond to their understanding of ensuring the security of their states? It would be right not only to think about it but also to understand that if American missiles are deployed in Poland and Romania, Europe will lose what it has achieved in the framework of global security over decades.

Since America has left no other choice, the Russian Federation is forced to direct Russian missiles at military bases with American missiles located in European countries, protecting its citizens and ensuring the security of the state,” said Viacheslav Volodin.

“This can be avoided. Russia, for its part, continues to advocate for global security. However, dear colleagues from European parliaments, today much depends on you. If you allow deploying American missiles in Europe, you must realize the consequences of this,” he stressed.

“PACE shall realize its responsibility to the citizens of the countries that form the Council of Europe, and together with the European Union do everything possible to maintain security on the European continent.

It would be right to convene extraordinary meetings of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the European Parliament to consider the deployment of American missiles in Europe. There is still the possibility to avoid mistakes. In any case, parliamentarians should do everything for this,” the Chairman of the State Duma emphasized.
