The Chairman of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation of the eighth convocation. Elected in single mandate constituency № 163 (Saratov constituency - Saratov Oblast)
told parliamentary reporters: “The decision taken by President Vladimir Putin is aimed at protection of Russian citizens from the violence that takes place in Georgia.”
Viacheslav Volodin stressed that “extremist forces in Georgia are trying to seize power. To achieve this goal, they use anti-Russian and Russophobic rhetoric, relying on radicals. Such actions are unacceptable and damage the relations between our nations.”
The Chairman of the State Duma added that “despite the fact that the population of Georgia is 3 million 700 thousand people, last year by 2 million Russian tourists visited it. This brought more than $3.5 billion to the Georgian economy or about 10% of Georgia’s GDP. Those who are involved in provocations need to think: they harm not only the relations between our nations. First of all, with these actions, they are hurting the well-being of their citizens and business.”
“For our part, we believe that it is necessary to do everything so that the safety of Russian citizens, families going on holiday, is guaranteed. Until the Georgian side provides for such guarantee, it is impossible to develop tourism and, moreover, to stimulate it by abolishing visas. We have already approached this decision, and it would have been taken if not for the actions of the Georgian radicals and the inability of the Georgian leadership to ensure law and order,” the Chairman of the State Duma noted.
