“The decision of the President of Russia to simplify the procedure of obtaining Russian citizenship for residents of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions of Ukraine is a goodwill gesture that will ensure the safety for a large number of Donbass residents who have been willing to become Russian citizens.” This opinion was expressed by a member of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Sergei Zhelezniak Zhelezniak Sergei Vladimiroviсh Zhelezniak

The parliamentarian noted: “By providing a possibility of obtaining citizenship and relevant rights, Russia does not violate any international norms, strictly follows federal legislation and interstate agreements. We are ready to grant citizenship to those who with open hearts and good intentions decided to become part of our strong state, built on the principles of democracy and respect for human rights.

The Ukrainian authorities still cannot take a decision on the status of Donbass, continue to neglect the Minsk Agreements and to fire on the territory of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions. Residents of Donbass are under constant pressure, living in conditions of ongoing war and total blockade by Ukraine.

Russia throughout the time of the conflict in the Donbass has been providing humanitarian aid to the residents of the South-East of Ukraine. Willingness of the leadership of our to grant citizenship to the residents of the DPR and the LPR country in a simplified manner is a humanitarian act that can make life easier for people who feel like they are part of the Russian world,” stressed Sergei Zhelezniak.
