The specialized committee believes that the Japanese are deliberately politicizing the situation around the Kuriles

Anton Morozov, a member of the Committee on International Affairs, said that acting this way the Japanese are trying to strengthen their bargaining positions prior to the meeting of President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister of Japan Shinzō Abe. At the same time, the member of the State Duma stressed that for the Russian society and Russian politicians the very question of revising the jurisdiction over the Kuril Islands is unacceptable

: “By politicizing the situation around the Kuril Islands, the Japanese are trying to strengthen their bargaining positions prior to the meeting between Abe and Putin. Of course, they cannot but hear those critical statements that are addressed to the Japanese delegation planning to raise the issue of the Kuril Islands,” said Morozov.

For the Russian society and for Russian politicians, the very question of revising the jurisdiction over the Kuril Islands is unacceptable.

However, the Japanese are quite persistently trying to continue this line. It seems to us that these attempts will not be successful. As the results of World War II, according to which the islands came under the jurisdiction of the Soviet Union and Russia, are firm and are not subject to revision.”
