Migration problems were one of the topics of discussion. “There were suggestions on this topic. Refugees need help; more than a thousand people a day make a decision to return to Syria. Syrian colleagues are interested in the experience of implementing measures to support compatriots,” explained Sergei Gavrilov, Chairman of the Committee on Issues of Public Associations and Religious Organizations.
The parliamentarian stressed that ”State Duma members are ready to exchange experience in strengthening the foundations of civil society with their Syrian colleagues.“ In this regard, a brief overview of the legislative initiatives adopted by the State Duma and aimed at regulating the movement of volunteers, the activities of socially oriented NGOs, and ensuring the protection of human rights was given to the Speaker of the Syrian Parliament.
“Building cooperation between parliamentarians of Russia and Syria in the field of human rights and the development of civil society, in general, is an alternative to Western intervention. Our experience is a serious lesson in democracy for all countries,” says Sergei Gavrilov.
He also noted that “Syria is an example of religious tolerance, non-interference in the internal issues of religion” and expressed the hope that “Russian-Syrian relations will be strengthened both between nations and between religious organizations.”
