“In the midterm elections to the US Congress, there were no surprises. In confirmation of all forecasts, Democrats get the majority of seats in the House of Representatives, Republicans strengthen their positions in the Senate. Such an outcome shows that the split in American society still persists,” said Leonid Slutskiy Slutsky Leonid Eduardovich Slutsky

In his opinion, these elections were a vote of confidence for the policies of US President Donald Trump, an indicator of support of his positions, and that is why they were considered so important. However, it was also obvious that any outcome would increase the pressure of the Congress on the American leader, the parliamentarian said.

Leonid Slutskiy believes that with Democrats obtaining the majority of seats in the House of Representatives, control over all previous legislative initiatives in the sphere of foreign policy will only become tougher, and this will primarily occur on the Russian track.

“There, even before the results of the voting, were calls for the introduction of the second package of absolutely absurd sanctions for the Scripals’ case. Political speculations are still there, the “anti-Russian card” is still being used by Trump's opponents. So, unfortunately, any fundamental changes in Russian-American relations are highly unlikely,” said the Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs.

“However, we still hope that common sense will sooner or later prevail on Capitol Hill. We will continue contacts and cooperation with those American politicians who are ready to engage in a constructive dialogue. And there are many of them, ” concluded Leonid Slutskiy.
