Dmitrii Novikov, First Deputy Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs, noted that during the voting the countries expressed the view determined by their allied responsibilities, Euro-Atlantic solidarity and, in some cases, very serious dependence of these countries on the United States

explained the decision of the First Committee of the UN General Assembly not to submit for consideration Russian draft resolution on the Treaty on the Elimination of Intermediate-Range and Short-Range Missiles.

“As you know, voting in the UN is not completely free for some states. During the voting, countries expressed the view determined by their allied responsibilities, Euro-Atlantic solidarity and, in some cases, very serious dependence of these countries on the United States,” the parliamentarian said.

However, Mr. Novikov urged not to forget about those countries supported Russia.

“In these circumstances, while remaining a power striving for global domination, the United States is able to influence large groups of countries and the voting proved it. It also demonstrated the US insistence on willingness to tear apart the INF Treaty. But at the same time, it should be noted and evaluated that quite a lot of countries have expressed support for the Russian position, it is worth a lot. And we should take into account this part of the voters when we assess the situation,” the parliamentarian concluded.

Earlier on Friday, it became known that the First Committee of the UN General Assembly responsible for issues of disarmament and international security, refused to consider Russian draft resolution in support of the INF Treaty. 55 voted against the submission of the draft, 31 countries voted in favor, 54 states abstained. The United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ukraine, Argentina, Greece and France are among those countries that did not support the consideration of the draft resolution.

Russia earlier in the draft resolution proposed the UN General Assembly to call on the parties of the Treaty on the Elimination of Intermediate-Range and Short-Range Missiles to preserve the agreement. The document states that actions undermining the INF Treaty should be considered as threatening global strategic stability and security. Russian diplomats suggested including the issue of preservation of the Treaty in the agenda of the next 74th session.
