“The State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation expresses deep concern over the escalation of the situation in Transnistria, which directly affects the rights and interests of citizens of the Russian Federation and Russian compatriots living there and poses a threat to their safety and well-being,” the statement said.

The members of the State Duma added that the internal political crisis aroused during the presidential elections in the Republic of Moldova in 2020, followed by open foreign interference from Romania, the United States and other Western states, “has not been resolved and the situation is getting worse with the approach of the early parliamentary elections which will be held on 11 July 2021.”

In addition, as it is stressed in the document, the Ukrainian authorities “play a harmful role by escalating the conflict and stifling Transnistria.”

“The State Duma considers unacceptable any destructive and irresponsible statements and actions of the authorities of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine aimed at undermining the role of the current format of the peacekeeping mission, condemns the blockade and restrictive measures against Transnistria and stresses the need to unblock the negotiation process to resolve the Moldova-Transnistria conflict in the shortest possible time at all levels and especially in the framework of the Permanent Conference for Political Questions in the Framework of the Negotiating Process on the Transdniestrian Settlement in the 5+2 format,” the statement says.

It is noted that the freezing of bank and correspondent accounts of Transnistrian companies in commercial banks of Moldova remains an acute problem for Transnistria. Numerous pensioners, citizens of the Russian Federation, who are not able to use their personal accounts and bank cards on the territory of Transnistria, are also experiencing difficulties.

“Members of the State Duma see the joint plans of the Moldovan and Ukrainian authorities, calls for undermining the role of the current format of the peacekeeping mission as a threat to peace and stability, interests of citizens of the Russian Federation and Russian compatriots living in the region,” the statement says.

Russian parliamentarians also drew attention to the inadmissibility of using the COVID-19 pandemic as the pretext to increase political and socio-economic pressure on the citizens of Transnistria.
