session of the UN General Assembly María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés took place on July 29 at the State Duma.
“The purpose of my visit is to deliver a message on the need to strengthen the system of multilateral relations and the supremacy of international law,” said the President of the 73 session of the UN General Assembly and stressed that “there is a serious need to strengthen the multilateral system, and the UN is the basis of this system and the values that we should protect and strengthen.”
Aleksandr Zhukov and María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés discussed the enhanced cooperation between Russia and the United Nations to address the global challenges and threats that the world is facing, such as terrorism, migration, climate change and oceans pollution.
“All these issues require the enhanced mutual cooperation. And we count on Russia as a serious ally on these issues,” stressed María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés.
During the meeting, parties paid particular attention to the development of the inter-parliamentary dimension of interaction and strengthening the cooperation of parliamentarians of all countries with the United Nations Organization.
“We fully agree with you that the United Nations should be strengthened, the role of the UN should be enhanced. The UN is the parliament of the world,” said Aleksandr Zhukov.
The First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma noted that “parliaments of all
countries of the world should cooperate as closely as possible with the UN”.
