Leonid Slutskiy commented on Donald Trump's call to the Russian Federation and China to abandon nuclear weapons

The Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs believes that this appeal of the President of the United States can be interpreted “nothing else as a PR move”. He also reminded that Donald Trump is making contradictory statements, not for the first time

“We understand that if Russia and China, let's make such a fantastic assumption, get rid of nuclear weapons, strategic stability will be really undermined. The balance of power between Washington and Moscow was based on the so-called guaranteed mutual destruction. If there is no such balance, then there will be no less than the risk a new war, and the most real one,” said the parliamentarian.

“In this case, the US President obviously hopes that having heard such statements, the world community will be trumpeting about how brilliant Donald Trump is. In fact, everything that happens in the realities of the United States – I mean the increase of the military budge, and withdrawal from the INF Treaty, and many other destructive tendencies, including towards Russia, makes us think that all these appeals still lack a substantive basis,” noted Leonid Slutskiy Slutsky Leonid Eduardovich Slutsky

“Let's see what statements Donald Trump will make next. But today it is a pure PR move. It is difficult to assume that any serious steps towards global disarmament will follow,” the Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs said.

“We will follow further rhetoric. I wish it was not populism, but a constructive talk,” he said. According to the parliamentarian, the first step towards this could be the resumption of US participation in the INF Treaty, since withdrawal from this treaty means the non-prolongation of the START-3 Treaty in 2021, and therefore the collapse of the entire nuclear containment architecture on the planet.

“I wouldn’t like this scenario to be implemented,” concluded Leonid Slutskiy.
