“The resolution of the European Parliament on recognition of Juan Guaidó as the legitimate President of Venezuela is a gross violation of the norms of international law and interference in the affairs of a sovereign state. The decision was certainly made because of the notorious Euro-Atlantic solidarity, which is very regrettable,” said Leonid Slutskiy Slutsky Leonid Eduardovich Slutsky

He added that “the head of Venezuela can be elected only by its people in general elections. Neither the US president, nor the State Department, nor the European Parliament can impose on the Venezuelans another leader even by recognizing the self-proclaimed Guaidó.”

According to the Chairman of the Committee, Western countries are acting in their paradigm, “trying to organize a coup in Venezuela by supporting the so-called opposition and bring a politician controlled by Washington to power in Caracas”. “This is insolent and cynical,” he stressed.

“And we remember very well where this policy leads to on the example of the former Yugoslavia, Iraq, Libya, Syria, and Ukraine. Some countries are no longer on the world map, in others the economy is destroyed, and foreign companies manage the oil complex, and in some countries, there is still a war with a common evil, international terrorism,” said Leonid Slutskiy.

He did not rule out that “if the situation goes further along the path of external escalation,” the State Duma may adopt a statement on the situation in Venezuela.
