The State Duma at the plenary meeting on December 19 entrusted the Committee on International Affairs to request information from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation on the course of Russian-Japanese talks on the conclusion of treaty of peace and the attribution of the Kuril Islands. A group of members of the CPRF faction initiated to adopt relevant protocol commitment.
“It is suggested to entrust the State Duma’s Committee on International Affairs to request information from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation on the course and interim results of negotiations held between the officials of the Russian Federation and Japan on the Kuril Islands issue in 2018, including the possibility of returning to the provisions of the Soviet-Japanese Joint Declaration of 1956 relating to cession of Shikotan and Habomai Islands to Japan,” the statement says.

stressed at the meeting, that “information is being spread by reference to Russian officials about the possibility of returning to the provisions of the Soviet-Japanese Joint Declaration of 1956, according to it Shikotan
and Habomai Islands are transferred to Japan”. “We request this information, we
want to analyze it and all activities that are conducted,” said Mr. Kurinnyi.

promised “to address the Foreign Ministry the same day.” However, he drew attention to the fact that the position of the Russian Foreign Ministry on this issue had been repeatedly
stated, including in a recent interview of the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey
Lavrov with Komsomolskaya Pravda. “A comprehensive answer was given to this
question. But we got the commitment, will consider it and later inform the Chamber about the results,” Mr. Slutskiy concluded.
