Member of the State Duma
Committee on International Affairs Anton Morozov

on Tuesday commented on a statement made by the President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, that the country
will soon receive a positive response about becoming a member of the EU, because
the Union is incomplete without Ukraine.
“The European Union will simply receive the next parasite as Ukraine. Experience has shown that all Eastern European countries are not EU donors, but budget funds recipients. Ukraine, economically, is an unprofitable member of the European Union,” he said.
The member of the State Duma questioned that in case of becoming the EU member, Kiev would at least be able to offer something to the community.
“This country has got quite good scientific and technological infrastructure since the USSR, but now it all has fallen in decline, and I do not think that the technologies that Kiev possesses are of interest to the European Union. Maybe the EU is interested in dark, rich soils, natural resources and labour force, but not so much that as all these things can be argued in favour of the admission of the country to the EU,” Mr. Morozov concluded.
On November 22, the Verkhovna Rada adopted in first reading a bill enshrining the strategic course of the state to the acquisition of full membership in the European Union and NATO in the Constitution of the country.
