Viacheslav Volodin: martial law in Ukraine was declared to preserve the political power of Petr Poroshenko

The Chairman of the State Duma expressed such opinion to parliamentary journalists. He urged to discuss the situation in Ukraine at the international level, "because today in the center of Europe there is a state whose leadership is trying to maintain power by any means, and human rights are being violated," he stressed

“Today it is becoming absolutely clear to everyone that this provocation, arranged by the President of Ukraine, Petr Poroshenko, has the goal of preserving personal power,” said Viacheslav Volodin Volodin Vyacheslav Victorovich Volodin

He reminded that martial law was declared on the territory of ten regions of Ukraine. “These are areas where the policy of [President of Ukraine Petr] Poroshenko is least supported, and where he has the fewest supporters and the largest number of critics. Therefore, the introduction of martial law allows him, and most likely, it was his goal, to clean up his opponents prior to the elections and to continue building his election campaign, knowing that there is no alternative and that no one would interfere,” added the Chairman of the State Duma.

Viacheslav Volodin also stressed that the situation in Ukraine should be discussed at the international level.

“For our part, we will bring this topic for further consideration and discussion,” he said.

“Such a neighbor like Ukraine cannot but worry other states, we can expect anything today. And the decision on martial law, especially when military units get fully operational, once again underlines that President of Ukraine Petr Poroshenko will go to any extremes in his desire to preserve his personal power”, said the Chairman of the State Duma, adding that by such actions Petr Poroshenko actually ‘cleans’ those territories, where martial law was declared, from his political opponents.

“The tension created suggests that practically in the center of Europe there is a state whose leadership is trying to remain in power by any means, and human rights are being violated,” said Viacheslav Volodin.

The Chairman of the State Duma also expressed gratitude to the Russian border guards, who “acted in a cohesive, decisive, and courageous manner, did not allow penetration into the Russian territorial waters and did everything to protect the law. They acted in accordance with international rules.”

“Our colleagues in the European community should know this. I hope that they will form their opinion, although in many ways they are now hostages of earlier decisions. But I don’t think that someone wants to sit on a powder keg with a lit fuse when the Ukrainian leadership is constantly trying to bring this situation to a critical state,” he said.

“It is just necessary to look at everything with open eyes and give the assessment, which absolutely corresponds to the today’s situation. It shouldn’t be kept silent, and we would like our European colleagues to finally think about what is happening in Ukraine and the consequences of the policy of supporting the government that came to the leadership of Ukraine as a result of the coup d'etat,” concluded Viacheslav Volodin.
