The decision of the Council
of the European Union to adopt sanctions regime
to counter the use of chemical weapons
is highly questionable, said Leonid Slutskiy
Slutsky
Leonid Eduardovich
, Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs.
Let us remind that on Monday in Luxembourg, the foreign ministers of the European Union countries adopted a new regime of restrictive measures to address the use and proliferation of chemical weapons. According to it, the European Union “will be able to impose sanctions on persons and entities involved in the development and use of chemical weapons anywhere, regardless of their nationality and location.”
“The decision of the EU Council to adopt sanctions regime to counter the use of chemical weapons is highly questionable. The UN and its entities have already developed instruments for monitoring and accountability in this regard. What about the mandate of the UN Security Council? Who should take responsibility for it and how will the degree of liability be determined? It is all very strange,” the Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs said.
He considers this decision as nothing more than populist.
