The Chairman of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation of the eighth convocation. Elected in single mandate constituency № 163 (Saratov constituency - Saratov Oblast)
held a meeting with the Speaker of the Islamic
Consultative Assembly of the Islamic Republic of Iran Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.
They discussed current issues of inter-parliamentary cooperation between Russia
and Iran, including within the framework of BRICS.
“BRICS is a good opportunity for many countries to be realized, to do everything to protect their national interests, preserve traditions, culture and, of course, develop cooperation on mutually beneficial terms and build relations on the principles of respect and friendship,” said Vyacheslav Volodin.
The Chairman of the State Duma emphasized that “BRICS already represents almost half of the world’s population and is a leader in economic development and growth in the world.”
According to Vyacheslav Volodin, parliamentarians should make their own contribution to the enhancement of cooperation within the framework of BRICS, addressing issues of harmonization of legislation, forming a legal space in promising areas and fields of cooperation.
Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf thanked Vyacheslav Volodin and the Russian Federation for supporting the Iranian people in the difficult days after the death of the President of the Republic Ebrahim Raisi. “Only in difficult times you can see who are your true friends,” said the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament.
According to Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, BRICS unites people around certain goals and objectives. “Not only the bilateral aspect of our relations, but also our cooperation within the framework of BRICS, the SCO and the Eurasian Economic Union becomes more strategic and can influence certain global processes,” emphasized the Speaker of the Parliament of Iran.
Bilateral trade between the Russian Federation and Iran in January–May 2024 compared to the same period in 2023 increased by 15% and reached $1.8 billion, as noted Vyacheslav Volodin. According to Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, there is great potential for bilateral economic cooperation: Russia and Iran together can implement large energy and cargo transportation projects.
During the meeting, Vyacheslav Volodin asked Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf to enhance the work of the Commission on Cooperation between the State Duma and the Parliament of Iran.
On July 11–12, St. Petersburg hosts the 10th BRICS Parliamentary Forum at the Tauride Palace. As part of the events of the Forum, parliamentarians will
discuss the role of parliaments in enhancing the efficiency of the system of international relations and ensuring its democratization, issues of countering
the fragmentation of the multilateral trading system and the results of global
crises. Aspects of inter-parliamentary humanitarian and cultural cooperation will
also be discussed at the meetings.
