Russia has taken over the PABSEC chairmanship

The 58th plenary session of the General Assembly of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation was held via videoconference on Monday, November 22.

The chairmanship of the organization was transferred from the Romanian Parliament to the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation.

He noted Russia’s interest in the further development of multilateral economic cooperation in the region aimed at peace, stability and prosperity. “At the same time, we believe that it is very important to avoid politicizing the PABSEC activities, using this important platform to promote opportunistic or confrontational issues,” said the Deputy Chairman of the State Duma.

“During the chairmanship of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, we plan to prioritize the main issues of the modern economy, primarily energy security, trade and transport flows expansion,” added Alexander Babakov.

According to him, the next 59th plenary session of the PABSEC General Assembly could be held in Moscow in June 2022, if the sanitary and epidemiological situation improved. Alexander Babakov invited his colleagues to take part in the next session.

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation was established in 1993 on the initiative of Russia and Turkey. It consists of representatives of parliaments of 12 BSEC member states: Azerbaijan, Albania, Armenia, Bulgaria, Greece, Georgia, Moldova, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine.

The PABSEC activities are aimed at providing parliamentary support in achieving the BSEC objectives and promoting the strengthening of the legal basis for multilateral economic, trade, social, cultural and political cooperation in the Black Sea region.

The Chairman of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin appointed the Deputy Chairman Alexander Babakov as coordinator on cooperation between the State Duma and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation.
