Parliamentarians discussed issues of inter-parliamentary cooperation and agreed to enhance bilateral cooperation

and Chairman of the Majlisi Milli of the Majlisi Oli of the Republic of Tajikistan Rustami Emomali discussed issues of development of cooperation between Russia and Tajikistan in different areas, including, economy and security, exchange of legislative experience, overcoming the COVID-19 consequences, as well as humanitarian and sport cooperation.

This is the first visit of Rustami Emomali to Russia after his appointment Chairman of the National Assembly of Tajikistan.

“We want the contacts between our parliaments to be constant and intensive,” stressed Aleksandr Zhukov. Rustami Emomali stressed that cooperation between our countries was one of the priorities of the foreign policy of Tajikistan. ‘Inter-parliamentary ties play important role in the Russia-Tajikistan cooperation,’ he said.

Rustami Emomali thanked Russia for providing assistance to Tajikistan in countering COVID-19, in particular for the supply of diagnostic systems, sending humanitarian aid and specialists. Aleksandr Zhukov noted the readiness of the State Duma to share with the parliament of Tajikistan the experience of developing laws aimed at supporting business and citizens and all spheres affected by the pandemic.

“We have taken significant measures. We adopted 32 bills this year to overcome the COVID-19 consequences,” said the First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma.

The parliamentarians also discussed economic cooperation. Rustami Emomali stressed that ”Russia is one of the main foreign trade and investment partners“ of Tajikistan. He added that 80 Russian regions have established cooperation with Tajikistan. However, the development should not stop, and Tajikistan needs Russian investment.

Regional and global security issues were also discussed at the meeting. “Our countries cooperate successfully in the fight against terrorism, extremism, transnational organized crime groups, including drug trafficking,” said Rustami Emomali. He stressed that the special services of the two countries had established close and effective cooperation in that area.

The issue of development of humanitarian cooperation was also discussed at the meeting. Rustami Emomali recalled the construction of five schools in Dushanbe where children would be able to study Russian language. Aleksandr Zhukov stressed that Russia appreciated the attention to the Russian language education in Tajikistan.
