On September 23, 2020, a meeting of the Chairman of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Viacheslav V. Volodin and the Chairwoman of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan Sahiba A. Gafarova (hereinafter referred to as “the parties”) was held at the State Duma as part of the programme of the official visit of the Speaker of the National Assembly of Azerbaijan to the Russian Federation.
During the meeting, which was held in a constructive and friendly atmosphere, the parties discussed a wide range of issues on the bilateral, regional and international agenda in order to develop parliamentary cooperation between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Azerbaijan.
It was noted that the relations of strategic partnership nature between our states were based on strong traditions of friendship, mutual respect and good neighborliness.
The parties confirmed their mutual intention to enhance cooperation in the trade and economic, scientific and technical, cultural and humanitarian spheres.
On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations, the importance of strengthening the UN's coordinating role in international relations, ensuring stability and security in the world, and developing equal cooperation between States was also emphasized.
The parties agreed to intensify cooperation at international parliamentary platforms and within the framework of multilateral parliamentary formats, including in order to improve national legislations on countering modern challenges and threats.
In this context, the importance of joint work of parliamentarians in order to address the spread of the new coronavirus and minimization of negative effects on the economy and citizens of both States was underlined.
Taking into account that this year marks the 75th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War and the end of World War II, the parties noted the inadmissibility of attempts to underestimate the crucial contribution of the people of the USSR in saving the states of Europe and the world from the ”brown plague“, to rewrite history, and to justify crimes of the Nazis and their collaborators. It is the moral duty of the present and future generations to preserve the historical truth about the events of those years, to respect the memory of those who gave their lives for the Victory and to prevent the resurgence of Nazism.
The parties also discussed forms and methods of joint work, including within the framework of relevant committees and commissions, to increase the efficiency of inter-parliamentary cooperation in resolving specific issues in the interests of citizens of both states.
The parties reaffirmed their readiness to sign an agreement on cooperation between the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation and the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and on establishment of a permanent High-level Commission.
The document is planned to be signed during the upcoming visit of the Chairman of the State Duma to the Republic of Azerbaijan.
