On Thursday, October 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered a speech at the Russia-Africa Summit, which is being held in Sochi. He said that the event gathered representatives from all 54 African states and leading regional organizations.

“It is the first meeting of this scale, which is evidence of our mutual desire to promote ties in all spheres and to strengthen our multifaceted partnership,” said the President of the Russian Federation.

According to Vladimir Putin, ”the development of relations with African countries and regional organisations is among our Russian foreign policy priorities.“

“African states are confidently gaining political and economic weight, affirming themselves as one of the important pillars of the multipolar world order, and are taking an increasingly important part in working out international community’s decisions on key issues related to the regional and global agenda,” the Russian head of state said.

Vladimir Putin also emphasized that on many issues ”our positions are close or coincide on many of those matters, which creates favourable conditions for constructive interaction at the UN and other international platforms.“

, who also takes part in the Summit, said that this is an ”unprecedented event“. “We heard it in a speech by President of Russia Vladimir Putin and we see it from the very format of the Summit that a completely new page is beginning in the history of relations between Russia and Africa. Russia is returning to Africa. We will help each other develop the economy to become stronger and improve the quality of life of people,” she said.

In July in Moscow the parliamentary conference “Russia-Africa”, which was held as part of the 2nd International Forum “Development of Parliamentarism”, took place. The Forum was attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The delegation of African countries was represented by 300 parliamentarians and 50 experts. The Conference was held ahead of the Russia-Africa Summit, proposed by the head of state.
