Chairman of the State Duma and a member of the UK House of Lords discussed the need to restore ties between the parliaments of the two countries

“I would like to take this opportunity to speak to you in the spirit of the meeting that we attend and see what we can do to make the world a better place,” said Lord Waverley. He is a peer of the House of Lords of the UK Parliament.

The member of the House of Lords emphasized that “we need to create an atmosphere of trust to resolve all issues between our countries.”

“We need to find those [ways] of communication, that tone that would not replace the work of the executive branch. At the same time, there should be a dialogue between parliamentarians,” Viacheslav Volodin believes. He emphasized that Russia is open to dialogue because that is precisely what the nations want. Lord Waverley also believes that contacts are needed.

Also at the meeting, the peer raised the Brexit topic and noted that if it happens, the UK will have to actively develop relations with other countries. The Chairman of the State Duma emphasized that Brexit is an internal matter of a sovereign state, and it has nothing to do with Russia, but relations between the countries should be developed. “Brexit happens or not, I can say one thing: regardless of this, we need to build relationships because it is the future.”
