Leonid Slutskiy commented on the termination of the INF Treaty

The Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs noted that "the responsibility for breaking down the INF Treaty rests solely with the United States," and called "outright cynicism" attempts to transfer blame for the American unilateral withdrawal from the Treaty to Russia

“Washington was systematically breaking the INF Treaty, thus giving itself discretion in light of the confrontation policy unleashed against Russia and China. The United States, which for years has not complied with the obligations of the Treaty itself, has done everything to prevent negotiations on the elimination of mutual claims with the Russian side. Instead of open dialogue, we were presented an ultimatum,” said Leonid Slutskiy Slutsky Leonid Eduardovich Slutsky

The only possible Moscow’s answer was tit for tat measures, he reminded.

“But we did not withdraw from the Treaty, we suspended our participation, giving the United States the opportunity to preserve the INF Treaty. However, Washington chose to “tear down” one of the pillars of the global arms control architecture in order to establish its own hegemony,” the parliamentarian concluded.

Earlier, on August 2, the US official withdrawal from the Treaty on the Elimination of Their Intermediate-Range and Shorter-Range Missiles was announced. On July 3, the President of the Russian Federation signed the law on the suspension of the INF Treaty. The Treaty was concluded between the USSR and the USA in 1987, however, at the beginning of 2019, the United States of America unilaterally refused to fulfill its obligations under the Treaty.
