“The results of the three-hour meeting of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe unequivocally show the intensification of Russian-Japanese cooperation,” the parliamentarian said.

stressed that the statements of the leaders of Russia and Japan indicated that their meeting had been held in a positive way. “Quite serious agreements were reached on expanding trade links and economic ties, increasing mutual tourist traffic and further intensifying of bilateral relations, including the joint development of the Kuril Islands,” added the member of the State Duma.

As for the central intrigue of negotiations — the conditions for further conclusion of a peace treaty between Russia and Japan, Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs said that no one expected an instant breakthrough. “There is a progress in this issue,” Leonid Slutskiy noted.

“The current tone and nature of the mutual dialogue give hope that further negotiations will follow the model of a positive sum game. As our President, Vladimir Putin, said, a common solution should be acceptable to the citizens of Russia and Japan and supported by the general public in both countries,” the parliamentarian emphasized

“In any case, the process is ongoing. And this is a positive result in solving the problem that has been on the agenda for many decades. We hope that Moscow and Tokyo will manage to reach a definite decision in the near future,” Leonid Slutskiy concluded.
