Chairman of the Committee on Issues of Public Associations and Religious Organizations Sergei Gavrilov
Sergey Anatolievich
held a meeting with representatives of the Lebanese Christian community in the State
Duma on November 2.
The parties discussed the problems of peacekeeping and humanitarian activities of Russia in the Middle East, counter- terrorism and the current situation of Christian communities in the region.
Member of the State Duma Sergei Gavrilov expressed his opinion that “we can observe the most difficult situation for Christian population in Syria and Iraq now.”
“Terrorists killed or expelled from the homes tens of thousands of Christians. Many Christian churches and monasteries were pillaged and destroyed. Russia supports the calls of the states of the Middle East to protect Christians from genocide,” the parliamentarian said. He also stressed that “Russia is perceived as guarantor of security and keeper of the balance of power in the Middle East”.
“It is necessary to bring together Christian communities in the region in order to ensure the principle of equality and protect the rights and freedoms of Christians,” Sergei Gavrilov said. “It is important to provide humanitarian assistance to states where religious discrimination takes place”.
